Back in 1947, long before DC dreamed up Supergirl, Little Lulu dreamed her up first. Now, I know practically nothing about Little Lulu outside of this 'toon, but I guess she was reasonably popular back in the day. In Super Lulu, Lulu an avid reader of Superman fell asleep after having been forced by papa to read Jack and the Beanstalk instead of her favorite Superman comic.
In her dream, she fought the Beanstalk Giant, then woke up and foiled a real life robbery at which point her dad decided comics weren't such a bad influence after all. Considering her imagination almost got her killed, I think he may have been right in the first place.
