Spotlight on Green Arrow

Not only did Superman Batman Apocalypse hit stores today, but the DVD contained an all new short featuring the Emerald Archer. Oliver Queen AKA Green Arrow first appeared in 1941's More Fun Comics #73 (despite what the cover depicts).

(UPDATED MAY 2012)

It would be over 30 years until until Ollie made his onscreen debut in the first season of the Super Friends series. Surprisingly, the archer's appearance in the episode Gulliver’s Gigantic Goof would be his singular appearance on any of the Super Friends incarnations.

Its would not be until 2004's Justice League Unlimited episode initiation that Green Arrow would once again join the animated Leaguers onscreen. Green Arrow became one of the spotlighted additions to the Unlimited series making several appearances including one with his sidekick Speedy.

In 2006, Green Arrow arrived in Smallville during the series sixth season. Oliver Queen appeared several times during the season and eventually become a series regular and founding member of Smallville's take on the Justice League.

In 2007, Green Arrow allied with The Batman during the animated series final season.

In 2008, the Green Arrow played a minor role in the animated Justice League: The New Frontier sporting a more classic look.

Green Arrow's old school appearance carried over into his design for Batman: The Brave and the Bold in which the archer was frequently depicted as Batman's friendly rival.

In Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, Syndicate member and Green Arrow analogue simply called Archer was smacked down by the Martian Manhunter.

Finally, in 2010 Green Arrow got to headline his own show - even if it was a short

The Green Arrow will remain a presence in DC animation, with confirmed appearances in the upcoming Young Justice series. He may also finally get his big break on the big screen if the long rumored Super Max film ever gets put into production. Stay tuned.

UPDATE: 11 MAY 2012

Green Arrow did in fact appear on Young Justice along side proteges Speedy (turned Red Arrow) and Artemis.

But the news of the day is that the Emerald Archer pulled off a major coup by landing his own live action series, Arrow, a feat managed by few DC heroes which has previously toppled the JLA, Aquaman, and Wonder Woman. Arrow will land in Fall 2012.

  1. Wait for the series, and hope for a full movie from WB before JL will be released
